Getting to Lagos Station: Trains from Lisbon and the Algarve

Lagos Train Station (Estação Ferroviária de Lagos) is a small railway station serving Lagos, a town in Portugal's Algarve region — not to be confused with Lagos, Nigeria, which has its own, much larger railway network and stations. Located about 0.744 kilometres from the city centre and roughly 600 metres from the local shopping centre, Lagos station sits close to the marina and within easy walking distance of the town itself.

As the western terminus of the Algarve line, Lagos station is a compact, low-key stop rather than a major hub, but it remains the main way to reach the town by train from elsewhere in Portugal.

There is no direct train from Lisbon to Lagos station — all services require a transfer at Tunes station. The first leg uses an Alfa Pendular or Intercidades train from Lisbon Oriente or Entrecampos, reaching Tunes in approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. A regional train then covers the final 45 minutes along the rail line to Lagos, making the total journey around 3.5 to 4 hours from Lisbon.

Booking your ticket well in advance is strongly recommended, since the intercity train between Lisbon and Tunes has limited capacity and standing isn't permitted. Popular train times — particularly Friday evenings and summer weekends — do sell out, and booking early also locks in cheaper Promo fares, which can be significantly lower than buying closer to your date of travel.

Station Facilities, Location and Getting Around

Facilities at Lagos station are limited, reflecting its size. There are no left luggage facilities available at the station, so travellers needing to store bags for the day should arrange storage elsewhere in town rather than relying on the station itself. A ticket office handles passenger services, and free parking is available nearby for anyone arriving by car.

Passengers should arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to allow time to find their platform and confirm their ticket. As with many smaller stations, safety and how busy the area feels can vary during early morning or late evening hours, so it's worth planning arrivals and departures with that in mind, particularly if travelling alone.

Lagos station is located close to the marina and within walking distance of the city centre, at approximately 0.744 kilometres away. Several bus lines run from near the station into the city centre for those who'd rather not walk, and taxis are typically available outside the main entrance for a more direct option.

From the station, popular destinations in and around Lagos — including the marina, the old town, and the region's well-known Algarve beaches — are all within easy reach by foot, bus, or a short taxi ride, making the station a practical starting point for exploring the wider area once you arrive.
